Why we recommend this test

The SIBO Lactulose Breath Test is a high-quality, non-invasive tool for identifying Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). It’s perfect for at-home use and includes lactulose to be ingested before taking your samples. It uses Quintron BreathTracker SC instruments, the industry standard for hydrogen and methane gas analysis, ensuring exceptional accuracy. This advanced method provides clear, reliable results using gas chromatography with solid-state sensors and results can be corrected based on carbon dioxide levels for reliable data.

It may be considered alongside Gastro-Intestinal Mapping or as a standalone test specifically addressing bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

What gets tested?

Hydrogen and Methane Gases: Produced by bacterial fermentation in the small intestine, providing insights into bacterial overgrowth.

Lactulose Challenge Response: Evaluates gas levels at 20-minute intervals over a 3-hour period, distinguishing between small intestinal and colonic activity.

Results also highlight Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO), a condition linked to methane production and symptoms like constipation.

We offer functional testing with and without practitioner interpretation. You can filter tests by consultation on the Functional Testing page. Certain tests, especially those involving clinically significant biomarkers, are only available with interpretation, and some require interpretation by an Integrative Medicine Doctor. We’ll ensure you’re seen by the right practitioner when your results are in. You can purchase a consultation later if you choose standalone testing, but we offer preferential rates for booking upfront.

We provide functional testing to help you make informed health decisions but do not offer medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Results are interpreted through a nutritional, lifestyle, and functional medicine perspective, and it is your responsibility to seek further evaluation, diagnosis or treatment from your primary healthcare provider.

Your digital results report will include indicators of how your specific results differ or align with ‘optimal’ ranges in functional medicine. Some reports include an element of written interpretation. If you’ve purchased a consultation we’ll explain your results and interpret them from a nutritional, lifestyle and functional medicine perspective. We may offer suggestions about how Integrative or Functional Medicine can help and can refer you for full consultation or Integrative Health Assessment with a relevant practitioner if desired. If your test includes a clinically significant biomarker and your result is abnormal, we’ll direct you to consult your primary healthcare provider. If you haven’t purchased a consultation and you’re concerned about your results, you’ll be able to opt-in at this stage.
