DNA Testing & Nutrigenomics

Nutrigenomics DNA Test: Histamine Intolerance Panel

Gain personalised insight into the genetic factors that influence histamine metabolism, histamine clearance and histamine intolerance. This at-home DNA test analyses 7 key genes involved in breaking down histamine, processing histamine-rich foods and supporting the body’s ability to regulate histamine levels.

This test may be particularly useful for individuals experiencing symptoms commonly associated with histamine intolerance, including skin reactions, digestive issues, respiratory symptoms, flushing, palpitations, brain fog, anxiety and food sensitivities.

Unlike standard health tests, your DNA does not change over time. This means your genetic blueprint can provide lifelong insight to help guide more personalised health choices.

Why choose this test?

Histamine plays an important role in immune function, digestion, nervous system signalling and inflammatory responses. When histamine is not broken down efficiently, it can contribute to a wide range of symptoms that are often difficult to identify and may affect multiple systems throughout the body.

The Histamine Panel provides insight into genetic factors involved in histamine metabolism, histamine clearance and the body’s response to dietary histamine. It also assesses pathways involved in methylation and the processing of substances that can influence histamine breakdown.

This information may be particularly valuable for individuals experiencing symptoms associated with histamine intolerance, food sensitivities or chronic allergic-type reactions. Understanding your unique genetic makeup can inform health and wellbeing choices throughout your life to support better histamine management.

If you’d like guidance from an expert practitioner consider booking a consultation with our Functional Medicine team for Nutrigenomics.

Your report includes:

  • Genotype results
  • Gene function summaries
  • SNP impact descriptions
  • Clinically relevant genetic variations
  • Nutrient and metabolic pathway analysis
  • Epigenetic and lifestyle insights

Your DNA sample will be anonymised before processing at the UK lab. DNA samples and genotyping data are permanently destroyed after strict retention periods. For more information please read our Privacy Policy.

Who is it for?

Adults and children living with:

  • Suspected or confirmed histamine intolerance
  • Eczema, hives, flushing or other skin reactions
  • Digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, nausea or acid reflux
  • Nasal congestion, sinus symptoms or respiratory irritation
  • Palpitations, flushing or fainting episodes
  • Brain fog, headaches, dizziness or lethargy
  • Anxiety, panic attacks or restlessness
  • Food sensitivities or reactions to histamine-rich foods

It may be suitable for anyone looking to:

  • Understand how their genes influence histamine metabolism and histamine clearance
  • Explore factors affecting food sensitivities and histamine intolerance
  • Better understand chronic allergic-type symptoms
  • Take a more personalised approach to diet and lifestyle choices
  • Support long-term gut, immune and nervous system health

What gets tested?

Histamine Metabolism: Assesses genes involved in breaking down and clearing histamine throughout the body. These pathways influence how efficiently histamine is processed and eliminated. Includes: HNMT and DAO.

Response to Dietary Histamine: Assesses genes involved in processing histamine-rich foods and substances that can interfere with histamine breakdown. These pathways can influence individual tolerance to dietary histamine. Includes: ALDH2, DAO and GPX1.

Nervous System & Immune Function: Assesses genes involved in neurotransmitter activity and immune regulation, both of which can influence histamine-related symptoms and responses. Includes: HNMT, MAOB and NAT2.

Methylation Support: Assesses genes involved in methylation, an important process that contributes to histamine metabolism and overall cellular function. Includes: MTHFR.

How do I prepare for the test?

You should:

  • Follow the collection instructions carefully
  • Complete and sign the consent form before returning your sample
  • Return the sample as soon as possible after collection

You shouldn’t:

  • Eat, drink, chew gum, or smoke within one hour of testing

The test is designed to be simple and non-invasive.

However, please make sure to follow the instructions and complete the documentation to ensure your sample can be analysed. Samples that aren’t suitable will need to be recollected at an additional cost.

Sample Type

At-home cheek swab DNA sample.

How will I get my results?

You’ll be invited to join our online portal, Practice Better, where you can securely access your results and communications.

Once your sample arrives at the laboratory, analysis typically takes around 14 working days. Once available, your report will be shared securely through the portal for download and future reference. You may also choose to book an optional consultation with a qualified practitioner at this stage.

FAQ's

Turnaround times vary depending on the test. We aim to process and submit your order to our provider within 2 working days. Test kits are promptly dispatched, and most samples can be collected and returned as soon as you're ready. Some tests may have specific requirements, such as timing around menstruation or return days. These details can be found under "How do I prepare for the test?" and in your kit. Estimated turnaround times refer to how long it takes to analyse your sample once it’s received at the laboratory.

All at-home test kits include clear instructions for sample collection and return, along with necessary packaging. Some tests require you to return the sample on specific days or immediately after collection. Most kits include pre-paid return labels, but some may require you to arrange a prepaid courier collection. Review the instructions carefully before collecting your sample and refer to the contact details in your kit for any questions.

Your kit will come with full instructions and some include video guides. We can support with queries and we encourage you to contact us using the link below before collecting your sample to ensure it can be effectively analysed.

We offer functional testing with and without practitioner interpretation. You can filter tests by consultation on the Functional Testing page. Certain tests, especially those involving clinically significant biomarkers, are only available with interpretation, and some require interpretation by an Integrative Medicine Doctor. We’ll ensure you’re seen by the right practitioner when your results are in. You can purchase a consultation later if you choose standalone testing, but we offer preferential rates for booking upfront.

We provide functional testing to help you make informed health decisions but do not offer medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Results are interpreted through a nutritional, lifestyle, and functional medicine perspective, and it is your responsibility to seek further evaluation, diagnosis or treatment from your primary healthcare provider.

Your digital results report will include indicators of how your specific results differ or align with ‘optimal’ ranges in functional medicine. Some reports include an element of written interpretation. If you’ve purchased a consultation we’ll explain your results and interpret them from a nutritional, lifestyle and functional medicine perspective. We may offer suggestions about how Integrative or Functional Medicine can help and can refer you for full consultation or Integrative Health Assessment with a relevant practitioner if desired. If your test includes a clinically significant biomarker and your result is abnormal, we’ll direct you to consult your primary healthcare provider. If you haven’t purchased a consultation and you’re concerned about your results, you’ll be able to opt-in at this stage.
